School Attendance Improvement Playbook

DME School Attendance Improvement Playbook

The DC Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education has released a new set of resources for improving attendance across the District. The School Attendance Improvement Playbook brings together research and resources for school-based practitioners to identify their most effective levers for changing the school and systemic conditions that lead to improved student attendance.

The Playbook is presented in multiple pieces:

  • the Core Playbook with brief introductions to concepts and tools
  • the Research Basis for Attendance Recommendations with both national and local research into best practices
  • several Implementation Workbooks with suggested SST forms and tools, attendance nudge practices, dashboard templates, and other resources (forthcoming).

The Playbook is intended as a move towards a public health approach to addressing chronic absenteeism and truancy in the District of Columbia. It is intended for LEA- and school-level attendance teams across DC.
